In popular belief Saint George is frequently associated with the slaughter of the dragon.
“The Golden Legend” tells how a dragon appeared one day, and forced the villagers to give it their sheep for food daily, until one day, there were no more sheep, so it asked for the king’s daughter. Than a brave Christian came along and offered to kill the dragon.
After piercing the dragon with his spear, the young man brought the princess home to the king, whom in return offered her hand in marriage and half of his Kingdome. The brave man refused saying he had many more things to accomplish in his struggle to defend the Church, the poor and stop injustice, than he said his name was George and left.
Saint George, the Great Martyr, is celebrated on the 23th of April.
The icon on glass is painted in oil, with golden foil and handmade patinated frame which was exposed to a process that gives it an authentic antique look.
